I have no idea what ESS9018 is performing internally. But at least the connections for DSD and PCM are totally different.
For DSD, Bit clock -> DCK, Data1 -> D1, D3, D5 and D7, Data2 ->D2, D4, D6 and D8. In this way, all 8 DACs within ESS9018
are fully utilized and the gains are good enough for most preamps.
But for Buffalo II, the DSD and PCM are sharing the same input pins. I really wonder that Buffalo II is not using all 8 Dacs in decoding DSD.
